Travel Security: Hotel Safety Tips
Whether you're traveling alone or with a group, whether you're on business or enjoying a relaxing vacation — following these few simple hotel safety tips will help ensure your safety and security while away from home:
Never leave your luggage unattended in a public place.
Always keep your hotel doors and windows locked. Make use of any additional security locking mechanisms provided (chains, door latches, deadbolts, etc.).
Ensure hotel personnel write down your room number rather than stating it out loud at check-in. If the desk clerk does speak the room number out loud, insist they assign you a new room. Better to make a minor scene at the front desk than to be the victim of a criminal listening in to your conversation.
As soon as you arrive, make a note of the location of all fire exits and elevators. If there are any public phones, note their location(s) as well.
Make sure your room has an indoor viewer (peephole) in the door and use it to verify the identity of anyone knocking before you open the door. If someone claims to be a hotel employee, call the front desk to verify their identity before permitting them to enter.
Keep all valuables — such as jewelry, laptop computers, cell phones and cash — in the hotel safe when you're not using them.
Keep track of your room keys, and never mention your room number out loud in public.
